Being the president of a nation is a huge responsibility, especially in a huge and diverse nation like India! Pooja Patel asked a few enthusiastic children what they would do if they were made the President of India for a few days…

Isha Arora, Class 6, Delhi Public School, Chandigarh
“The environment is an important part of our life and it needs to be preserved. Many citizens have a care-a-damn attitude about our environment and they end up harming it. So I would like to do something for the environment that also makes India pollution-free. I would also like to ban plastic bags right across the country. Various eco-friendly products are available in the market. I would like to promote them. India can also put its amazing natural resources to use by harnessing energy from the sun, water and wind by setting up huge solar plants, hydro-electricity plants and wind-mills that generate electricity. This will not only help preserve the exhaustible sources of energy, but will also enable us to provide electricity to the remotest villages in our country.”

Ayush Bhansali, Class 9, S D Jain Modern School, Surat
“Since agriculture is the prime occupation of India, one must provide security to farmers. So if I were the President, I would provide all farmers with loans, which will help them buy modern farming tools. I would also work on the infrastructure in India and make transportation easy and convenient for the citizens. For transportation, I would promote CNG vehicles to make the environment pollution-free. Education of the girl child is very necessary and I would provide all girls with free education right to the post graduate level as girls are equally important for our nation’s progress. I would also provide upgraded computers and more basic facilities in government schools to support poor children’s education. I think all children should receive an education, which will motivate them and help us build the nation’s future.”

Vaibhav Katarariya, Class 4, Presidency School, Bengaluru
“I would like to help the poor and needy and make them selfsufficient and selfreliant. As President, I would make policies that are favourable to the citizens and which help them progress. Clothes, shelter and education are some of the basic necessities that should be provided to every Indian citizen and I will make sure these are provided. Another important aspect that needs to be looked into is cleanliness. I would make an extra effort to keep the surroundings clean. I would provide advanced health facilities for all the senior citizens. I would also make sure that there are no beggars in the country.”

Yashvi Mittal, Class 1, Shri Ram School, Gurgaon
“I would encourage people to save water and electricity and be more ecofriendly. For the nation’s security, I would provide more training to the police and the commandos so that we don’t have to face any kind of attacks in our country. I would build more bridges, flyovers and trains to make a modern India. Giving jobs to people is also necessary for development.”

Shreya Vajpei, Class 11, Step By Step High School, Jaipur
“Lately I have been reading a lot about the scams in the country, which are the result of corrupt politicians and a loose judiciary. Considering this, I would tighten up the judicial system so that guilty politicians don’t walk away scot-free. Another major hurdle is corruption due to uneducated politicians. So a good way to stop this is to fix a basic educational qualification for at least the major political positions in the finance department. Along with this, as the President, I think I would do something for the youth. 60% of the Indian population is young and so it would help the nation’s progress if they are employed. Investing in human resources will prove to be a wise step as the youth will be the working force in the future.”

Adrija Subramaniam, Class 10, Navy Children’s High School, Mumbai
“I feel that a lot of areas need improvement but I would first like to work on government buildings. I would install solar panels on all the government buildings to promote clean energy. I would also increase the age for compulsory education to 18 years from the present 14 years because it doesn’t make sense to study only till class 10 and then leave it because it is not affordable. All transactions made for the development of the nation should be made public as transparency cuts down on corruption. Assets of all the politicians and bureaucrats should also be made public. Along with this I think smoking should be banned in general as it affects the people who are smoking as well as the people around them. If we can ban drugs, then we can also ban smoking as both are injurious to health.”
