Indians have always claimed that coconut oil is a superfood and is much healthier than other fats. However, according to Dr Karin Michels, professor at Harvard University, USA, coconut oil is one of the worst foods that you can probably eat; she even termed it as pure poison. According to Michels, there is absolutely no need for anyone to consume these so called superfoods when we can get all the necessary nutrients from foods like carrots, apricots and cherries. Although her claim maybe a little exaggerated, she is not entirely in the wrong. According to American Heart Association data, more than 80% of the fat in coconut oil is saturated, which is much more than the 63% present in butter and the 39 to 50% in animal fat.
