Recent reports suggest that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is embarking on an ambitious plan to turn Qatar into an island. A senior Saudi official said the government is working towards a plan of digging a canal to separate Qatar from the mainland, turning it into an island. Qatar has been diplomatically isolated from its neighbours for over a year. The aim of the canal project, known as the Salwa Project, is to build a 60km long, 200mt wide and 20mt deep canal around the country. The estimated cost of the project is $747million. According to reports, a part of the canal is expected to host a nuclear waste facility.
