This is the last book written by Philippa Pearce. The novel is a superb mystery about a little boy called Till. The novel is full of magic, mystery, darkness and light and emotions which completely engulf the reader.

In the book, Till loses his dog Bess in a meadow. He is quite sure he is not going to ever see the dog again and is very miserable. But then he meets a strange little an

called “a Finder” who offers his help to find his dog.

They start their investigation with interviews. The witnesses include a heron, a mole, a riddling cat and Miss Mousey. Though Till goes ahead with the investigation he does not trust the Finder till almost the end of the novel.

The humour and riddles are quite amusing and the illustrations are excellent.
