Conversation With the City

Poems

By Mahisa Mithani, Class 5, Bombay Scottish School, Mahim, Mumbai

One day whilst I was walking, littering on the street
I heard a voice crying to me
"Oh please don’t do that to me”
I was startled as I saw the city was talking to me

She cried to me I cough, I sneeze and am perpetually ill
My eyes water and I cannot breathe
Thanks to the smoke in which I am daily grilled
My head pains with the construction drill

The dumped garbage has overflown into my stomach
And has got the pain terrified
I limped and limped and limped with every tree cut
Was getting immobilised and now am PARALYSED

I feel hurt and betrayed by none other
But the ones whom I loved and sheltered
PLEASE, PLEASE HELP ME TO HELP YOU
So that I am not withered and you are treasured.

PS: The poem has been personified as if the city is a human
