Do Raccoons Wash Their Food?

Ask Us Questions

Raccoons don't actually wash their food before they eat, but they do prefer to dip it in water. However, they eat their food dry too. At one time, it was thought that raccoons lacked sufficient saliva for swallowing. However, scientists have disproved that theory and now believe raccoons dip their food in water to make it more pliable. This allows them to check for bone slivers or dangerous objects in the food.
