What You Need:
- One plastic straw
- Use your fingers to press on one end of the straw to flatten it - the flatter the better.
- Cut the flattened end of the straw to create an arrow shaped end.
- Flatten it out again.
- Now take a deep breath, put the pointed end of the straw in your mouth and blow hard into the straw. You will create the sound of a duck call.
- Try cutting the straw at different lengths to see how the sound changes or add the pointed end of the new straw to the uncut end of the first straw and then blow into it. Does this make a different sound?
The little triangle or arrow shape that you created when you cut the straw forces the two pieces of the point to vibrate very fast against each other when you blow through the straw. The vibrations from your breath going through the straw create the strange duck-like sound. When you add more length to the straw, the sound gets muffled and creates a new sound.
