Mountaineering is an exciting sport which includes walking, hiking, backpacking and climbing mountains. Mountaineering has its different branches of specialisations which include rock-craft, snow-craft and skiing. One can also practice artificial mountaineering and then move on to climbing actual mountains. Mountaineering season is normally between September and February.
Otzi the Iceman was the first person to land at 3,000ft, about 5,000 years ago. His well preserved mummy was found in 1991 in the Schnalstal glacier in the Otztal Alps, between Austria and Italy. This is considered to be the beginning of the sport of mountaineering. The world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest was first climbed on May 29, 1953 by Edmund Hiliary and Tenzing Norgay.
