A lituus is a brass instrument that is a variant of the early trumpet or horn. The lituus was used by the Romans, especially as a signalling horn in the army. The lituus has recently been in the news as researchers from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) have developed a system that enabled them to design this long-forgotten musical instrument. This instrument fell out of use 300 years ago and no one had any idea of what it looked or sounded like until this software was created. It is a rare and unique instrument and has a long thin straight horn with a flared bell at the end.
