‘My Dog’ is a moving and beautifully written book that doesn’t shy away from big emotions. 10-year-old Rhys loses his mom to an ailment, but in return finds comfort in a mysterious black labrador named Worthington that has been hanging around his mom’s bed in the hospital. As Rhys processes his grief, being uprooted from his home in Wales and adjusting to life with his dad, stepmum and new baby sister in London, he clings to Worthington, desperate for something familiar. The book is hard-hitting, especially for young readers, but it teaches the reader how to handle broken families, mental health and disability.
