Thousands of sea turtles were rescued after they managed to find their way out of the freezing waters and onto the beaches around South Padre Island in the Gulf of Mexico in Texas, USA. Volunteers, who themselves had been without any source of water, power or heat for almost a week due to a major snowstorm, worked around the clock to save the animals. Reptiles are cold-blooded animals that use the ambient temperature (or environmental heat) to maintain their body temperature. Due to the freezing temperatures in Texas, the water temperature dipped to 10ºC. The sea turtles were thus unable to maintain a steady heart rate, causing many of them to lose their ability to move and some even lost consciousness.
