5G in Space

Telecommunications start-up Omnispace and advanced technology giant Lockheed Martin will work together to develop a 5G network in space. It will be utilised for both satellite and existing land-based cell towers, to provide wireless services around the world. On March 23, the two companies announced that they have entered into a strategic interest agreement to turn a hybrid global communications network into reality.

This network will have the potential to redefine mobile communications. It will help eliminate dead zones as these satellites would not be affected by natural disasters like landbased service providers. The launch of the 5G network in space is mostly theoretical at the moment. However, the company is aiming for a 2023 timeframe, by when the prototype mobile devices will also be available.
