Abhinandan Varthaman


Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was honoured with the Vir Chakra, an Indian award for acts of bravery on the battlefield. Varthaman was captured by the Pakistani military when his jet was shot down during an air strike in Balakot, Pakistan, on February 26, 2019. He was kept in Pakistan for two days and returned to Indian authorities on March 1 at the Attari-Wagah border. He was presented the award for displaying patience, bravery and loyalty towards the country while in enemy hands.
