Animals in Trouble

According to researchers at the University College London, UK, 26 animals including farm animals like pigs, horses and sheep could catch coronavirus. The animals could be at risk of outbreaks at any time and thus may also threaten endangered species. Over the last few months, 10,000 minks have been killed in Utah, USA, and over 92,000 animals have been slaughtered at a farm in Spain after 90% of their population had caught the virus.

In the Netherlands, over 1 million minks have been killed over concerns that the animals could pass the virus back to humans. However, when Macaque monkeys were subjected to the virus in a laboratory, they could not be reinfected. Given that monkeys and humans share a close genetic connection, scientists are hopeful that a majority of humans may carry enough antibodies to shake off a reinfection.
