India’s Next Submarines

Work has started on the Rs1 lakh crore project to produce six nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) for the Indian Navy. Talking about
this development, Indian Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba said that 34 ships were currently under construction with projects worth Rs40,000 crore. The Indigenous Aircraft Carrier, IAC 1, will join the Indian Navy by 2020, pumping up the navy’s aviation arm as new fighters, surveillance aircraft and shipborne helicopters will also be procured. With this and the two deep submergence rescue vessel
systems that the Indian Navy is hoping to induct in 2020, the Indian Navy will join a select league of navies that are capable of providing submarine search and rescue services in the Indian Ocean region.
