India is one of the most populous countries after China. This year, China and India clocked a total population of 1.43 billion and 1.37 billion people respectively, which is around 19% and 18% of the total global population. According to a recent UN report, the population of India is estimated to reach 1.5 billion by 2050. In 2027, the rate of population growth in India is expected to start exceeding that of China, which will make India the most populated country in the world. The report states that after reaching its peak, the population of the country is expected to shrink in 2059.
