At least 14 labourers are trapped and feared dead in an illegal coal mine in the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. The coal mine near the Lytein River in Ksan village got flooded, leading to people being trapped inside. Disaster management agencies have started pumping water out of the mine in order to rescue the labourers, but their future seems uncertain. The police have registered a complaint against the unidentified owner of the coal mine. In 2014, the National Green Tribunal had banned unscientific and unsafe rat-hole coal mining in Meghalaya.
