Newsmaker: Maju Varghese


Indian-American Maju Varghese has been appointed as director of the White House Military Office (WHMO) by US President Joe Biden and Vice-president Kamala Harris. In Biden’s recent presidential campaign, Varghese served as a senior advisor. As the WHMO director, Varghese will now oversee military operations aboard Air Force One on presidential missions worldwide.

The WHMO is a department within the White House that provides military support for White House functions, including food service, presidential transportation, medical support, emergency medical services and hospitality services. Varghese is the son of immigrant parents from Kerala. He has a bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from the University of Massachusetts, USA. He has previously served in the White House under former US President Barack Obama.
