Plant to Be Named Shiv Suman

News

Frerea indica, an endangered plant that was first documented at Shivneri Fort in Maharashtra by British botanist Nicol Alexander Dalzel in 1865, is soon to be named Shiv Suman, which means Shivaji’s flower. Around 30 NGOs, representatives of the forest department, the Pune Municipal Corporation and the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) collectively decided to adopt the local name for the plant to honour Shivaji and to standardise the name of the plant species in the local vernacular language. The plant is native to Maharashtra and is found in Nashik, Satara, Pune, Raigad and Ahmednagar. A joint workshop has been planned in August with BSI, the forest department, the scientists and the NGOs where the formal christening of the plant will take place.
