USA’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Senseable City Lab have been working together to create a fleet of autonomous boats to deploy in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. These "roboats” will be the first boats of their kind to carry passengers. Each boat is 2mts long and has four propellers so it can move in any direction. It is also equipped with GPS and sensors to assist in navigation. The team plans to keep improving the roboat’s algorithms to make it better able to deal with challenges like disturbances from currents and waves. The team is also working towards making the roboat better equipped to identify objects that come in its way.
