Self-destructing Bacteria Found

Researchers at the San Diego School of Medicine in California, USA, recently discovered a newly emerged immune system in bacteria, which protects them from bacteriophages—viruses that infect other bacteria. The bacterial cells infected by the bacteriophages self-destruct in order to stop the infection from spreading to other cells. This new defence system was found in 10% of the 75,000 different bacteria that were tested. According to the researchers, the bacteriophages can be explored to create drugs that treat bacterial infections.
