Discovering India

Letters to Editor

Respected Editor, "If there is one place on the face of earth where the dreams of living men have found a home... it is India." Romain Ronald Majestic, vibrant, incredible India. Monumental history, rich traditions, wondrous geographical features, with 37 UNESCO World Heritage sights, India has it all. How many of these have you visited? I have visited only 9 cities of India!! Is it not a shame!! I wonder why tourists are rushing to Thailand, overlooking the serene beaches on Havelock Island; lining up to see the Egyptian Pyramids, forgetting the ancient ruins of Hampi. As per the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report, India stands at the 34th position. I feel my India deserves to be at the top of this list.

Tourism nourishes a country’s economy, stimulates development, generating foreign exchange and employment. I feel, most importantly, tourism builds bridges of tolerance and peace. To be the top choice for international and domestic travelers I feel special experiences our country offers should be promoted like water sports, a Bollywood encounter or a Holi fiesta!! More engaging Instagram presence and move towards greater e-visa should be made. Investments need to be made for better roads and connectivity. All the efforts will be in vain if the sanctity of our environment will not be preserved.

The news of Delhi’s toxic air quality is bound to discourage tourists. Ensuring the safety of women is also critical. We must be the best ambassadors for our country. We must strive to make our government’s initiatives like PRASHAD and Swadesh Darshan a success. This Independence Day our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi urged every Indian to visit at least 15 domestic destinations by 2022. I am getting my list ready, how about you?
