Guru Nanak Birth Anniversary is one of the most prominent festivals of the Sikh community. It is observed as the first birthday of 1st Guru of Sikhism. The very popular prayer of Guru Nanak Dev sung by the Sangat and gurudwaras around the world, "SAT GURU NANAK PRAGATYA, MITI DHUND JAG CHANAN HOYA". The founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak played an important role in shaping and strengthening the Sikh community. According to the Sikh literature, the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak is celebrated on the full moon day of the Indian lunar month, Kartik. Also known as Gurpurab or Guru Nanak’s Prakash Utsav, this day is celebrated with utmost enthusiasm among the Sikhs throughout the nation. Mainly associated with the Sikh community, Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated with enthusiasm and joy all over the nation. Not just Sikhs but even Hindus also celebrate this day to commemorate the birthday of Guru Nanak. People visit Gurudwaras and recite verses from the holy book of Sikhism, Guru Granth Sahib, on this day.
People from the Sikh community decorate their homes and organize grand get-togethers. Multiple celebrations and feasts take place at the Golden Temple, and thousands of Sikh and Hindu families visit Amritsar every year on this day for offering prayers at the holy shrine. The teachings of Guru Nanak Dev show us the path of establishing a just social order. The social order of his time was based on inequality and injustice. Baba Nanak condemned the caste structure and showed a path to his followers to rise above caste. The dignity of women has a special place in the teaching of Guru Nanak Dev. He not only talked about the equality of man and woman but gave special space to the woman as a creator. This year in 2020, Guru Nanak Jayanti day will be celebrated on 30th November on Monday.
