Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has been appointed the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI), a tenure that will conclude upon his retirement on November 23, 2025. Gavai began his legal career in 1985 and was appointed a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court in 2005, serving at benches in Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Panaji. He was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019. Over the course of his tenure, Gavai has contributed to several landmark rulings, including being part of the five-judge Constitution Bench that upheld the abrogation of Article 370, which removed Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.
