A recent study has found that the Earth’s oceans were green in colour about 2.4 billion years ago. Scientists believe the reaction between ferrous iron present in the water and oxygen generated by cyanobacteria led to this outcome at the time.

The reaction gave rise to particles resembling rust called iron hydroxide. This material allowed the passage of green light through; however, it soaked up the blue and red wavelengths of light, giving the water a green colour.
