Meghalaya and Assam have planned to establish a hydropower project that will enhance Assam’s irrigation facilities and provide electricity to both regions.

  • Meghalaya and Assam have planned to establish a hydropower project that will enhance Assam’s irrigation facilities and provide electricity to both regions. 
  • Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reached this decision during a meeting in June. During the meeting, they also discussed Guwahati’s urban flooding concerns. 
  • The Kulsi hydropower-cum-irrigation project will leverage the Kulsi River, known for its ecological significance. The river is a tributary of the Brahmaputra River. 
  • Though the 55-megawatt (MW) hydropower project is expected to benefit both states, environmental experts worry about its potential impacts on the region’s dolphins.
