Scientists from Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the University of Plymouth, UK, have discovered that the world’s oceans are darkening, posing a threat to marine biodiversity. Ocean darkening is the decline in the clarity of water, which reduces the distance sunlight can travel into the water. According to scientists, the depth of photic zones, the upper part of water bodies that are exposed to sunlight, has reduced. This is due to factors such as an increase in sea surface temperatures, agricultural runoff and an increase in algal growth. This change could negatively affect marine life and impact humans.
