Connected Through Generations

Grandparents guide and nurture their family with wisdom, care and love. They support the family’s growth while preserving its roots and values. Many countries around the world celebrate the first Sunday of September as Grandparents’ Day to honour the contributions of these elders who pass down the traditions of the family to the next generations.

This year, Grandparents’ Day will be celebrated on September 7. To celebrate the occasion, SCARLETT RODRIGUES asked a few RobinAgers what they admire and cherish most about their grandparents. Here’s what they had to say.

My great-grand dadu, Shri Narendra Kumar Mathur, is very smart, just like his namesake, Prime Minister Modiji. I love playing games with him, especially chess. At the age of 96, he beat me at the game! He was born in the year 1929 and will turn 100 in 2029. I’m sure he will live well past the 100-year mark! My great-grandfather is also a renowned mathematician and teacher. What amazes me about him is that he is still very active and mentally alert to solve mathematical questions. He is very inspiring and I wish to be like him.

My grandfather always asks me how I am and how my day was when I return from school. He loves to play games with me, especially cricket. I value his care and happy nature and I enjoy chatting with him. My maternal grandmother is also very protective of me. She showers me with her affection and prepares my favourite dishes. I cherish the warmth and selflessness of my grandparents.

The thing that I cherish most about my grandfather is that he loves me very much and never says “No” to me! My favourite memory with my grandfather is when he would pick me up from my preschool and we would walk hand in hand. On the way home, there used to be a supermarket. When we got close to the store, I would pull his hand and drag him inside. He would say, “Go, get whatever you want,” and I would come out of the store with my arms full of goodies!

My grandparents have showered me with love and have been the source of my strength. The relationship we have shared is irreplaceable. Learning how they overcame life’s challenges through their stories has inspired me to fearlessly face my own. They have been like precious gems, valuable and shining. They have taught me the importance of staying true to my values, such as honesty and respect, while achieving my goals. Additionally, through their lifetime of wisdom, they have guided me with advice that I will cherish forever!

I cherish every quality of my grandparents and the experiences I have with them, especially the memories made during the holidays. I wake up to the delicious breakfast lovingly prepared by my grandmother during the holidays. Then I assist my grandfather with gardening activities. I learn about flowers, vegetables and fruits and carry out simple tasks. This strengthens my bond with him. I love to engage in scientific conversations with my grandmother, as we are both fascinated by science. At night, they narrate fun and interesting anecdotes that fill me with joy. It is these sweet and loving moments that I cherish the most.

What I cherish most about the relationship with my grandparents is their timeless wisdom and warmth shared. They were always available with their refreshing stories—as a seasoning to every mood, a blessing to every occasion and a highlight of every day. Each moment I have shared with them is a valuable memory. They act as a bridge to our culture, traditions and values in this modern world. They are the best guiding lights not only to us, but also to our parents in today’s darkness.
