The recent approval by the Uttarakhand Forest Department to clear part of a forest in Uttarkashi has caused people to worry about its long-term impacts.
Forest land spanning 17.5 hectares will be taken up for the construction of the Netala Bypass, which seeks to enhance connectivity in the region.
The proposed bypass will be located in the Bhagirathi Eco-Sensitive Zone (BESZ), potentially endangering the ecosystem. To enable its construction, more than 2,000 trees will be felled, which experts believe could increase landslide threats.
The flash floods that occurred in Dharali in August have made people more critical of the project.
