In a pivotal move, Nepal has named Sabita Bhandari, a senior advocate, as its government’s attorney general. Bhandari replaced Ramesh Badal in the post subsequent to leadership changes in the government. Bhandari is the first female to serve in this capacity and will advise the government on legal matters. The tensions in Nepal that arose from a social media ban and the call for leadership change also contributed to the appointment of Nepal’s first female prime minister, Sushila Karki. Bhandari, whose father, Krishna Prasad Bhandari, is also in the legal field, had formerly served as an information commissioner at the National Information Commission.
