The Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh, known for its ecological significance, has received recognition as the first Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve of India.
The region has been conferred this status under the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
This addition has taken the number of Indian Biosphere Reserves recognised by the MAB programme to 13.
Extending over 7,770 sq kms, the Spiti Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve supports unique plant and animal species such as the iconic snow leopard. Apart from protecting critical species, this status will support the inhabitants of the region and enhance tourism.
