Scientists have found ancient pieces of glass in Australia that are believed to have formed due to the collision of an asteroid with Earth. On analysis, scientists found out that these glass pieces, also called tektites, have a unique composition, making them different from tektites discovered in Australasia previously. Scientists believe this asteroid collision occurred around 11 million years ago; however, they haven’t discovered the crater that resulted from it yet. According to them, Philippines and Papua New Guinea are among the crater’s potential locations. However, geological changes could have wiped out its signs.
DID YOU KNOW?
Tektites are glassy materials that form naturally due to asteroid impacts. Tektites of different sizes and colours, including black and green, exist.
Match the glass to how it is formed.
