Justice Surya Kant has taken charge as the new chief justice of India (CJI), succeeding Bhushan Gavai, who held the post previously. Kant, who belongs to Haryana, will serve as India’s 53rd chief justice. As CJI, Kant is expected to work towards bringing about improvements in the judicial system and dealing with various issues, such as those associated with the election system. Kant’s career experience includes serving as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and as the chief justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. Kant, who was elevated to the Supreme Court in the year 2019, has handled various issues, including social and environmental matters, during his judicial career.
