An Indian conservationist named Vivek Menon has been named the chair of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission (SSC), scripting history as the first Asian to serve in this capacity. Menon, who is known for his efforts towards preserving wildlife, will serve in this role from 2025 to 2029. During his more than 30-year career, he has worked towards protecting elephants, safeguarding the natural environment of animals and addressing the illegal trade of wildlife. He founded the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and has authored several books on mammals and wildlife.
