In today’s fast paced and modern times, many details of the recent past go overlooked, forgotten by majority of the masses. But, amongst those long-lost forgotten ashes there lays a glistening diamond, admired by teens and adults alike: The adventures of a boy named Harry Potter.
From a small table in a café of Scotland, the idea of ‘The Boy Who Lived’ quickly gained considerable acknowledgement. The golden trio of Harry, Ron and Hermione rapidly became role models for ardent fans, more commonly known as Potterheads. The personality traits of various characters and those of Hogwarts houses (Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin) continue to undoubtfully reflect in today’s modern generation. People who displayed the attitude of contempt towards books astonishingly found their second home at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
In fact, such an idea became so popularly recognized that Warner Brothers, the renowned film making studio, couldn’t resist the temptation of displaying the Wizarding World onto the big screen. With the coming of the movies of Harry Potter, fans found themselves immersed in the magical realm, happiness reaching no bounds on finally seeing Harry, Ron and Hermione in their physical forms.
It comes without surprise that with the craze of Harry Potter booming rapidly by each passing day, different types of merchandise paved their way into online shopping websites and into an uncountable number of stores.
Although, keeping fandoms and merch aside, Harry Potter has shaped the aspirations, thoughts, attitudes and overall, the main culture of the society that today, we call our own. People found the wizarding world to be deeply relatable and connected to their own, adolescent inner feelings and emotions which, in my view, is one of the core reasons for its phenomenal success. For an idea to go global, people must find a connection with it to truly call it ‘one’s own’ and Harry, Ron and Hermione proved inevitably so.
It’s not just the main trio that’s become the center of people’s attention, it’s the perfect shaping of background characters too. Wizards and witches like Dumbledore, Neville, Snape, McGonagall, Hagrid, Ginny and Luna also share an equally important role, contributing to the popularity of the series. Globally acknowledged lines such as ‘Always’, ‘I solemnly swear that I am up to no good’ and ‘Mischief managed’ can be found, scattered all over the pages of the world and by and large, the real life of the era.
Overall, if we were to sum it all up, Harry Potter isn’t just a tale, it’s the journey of a developing thought into a globally recognized, cultural phenomenon, unwaveringly reflecting the power of determination, courage, resilience and numerous qualities brought to life, winning millions of hearts. It’s a phenomenal idea which has found its way into the NO 1 most read books, films, shattering records of filmmaking and which I might say, the most popular craze of the era.
