Scientists have obtained insights into a rare geological phenomenon by observing a subduction zone fragmenting. This event is occurring near Vancouver Island under the Pacific Northwest, giving rise to microplates. A subduction zone is a region where one tectonic plate descends beneath another tectonic plate when they come into contact with each other. During this process, tectonic plates tear into smaller bits. Scientists have been able to observe this process, which is occurring gradually, for the first time.

DID YOU KNOW?
The Earth’s lithosphere is made of enormous plates called tectonic plates. The motion of these tectonic plates results in earthquakes, volcanoes and the formation of landforms like rift valleys and mountains.
