In a surprising breakthrough, scientists have found a 20km-thick layer of rock under the ocean floor in Bermuda. According to some scientists, this unique layer, situated between the Earth’s mantle and crust, could have arisen due to volcanic activity that took place in the region millions of years ago. Scientists also believe it could be associated with the splitting of Pangaea, the ancient supercontinent. Scientists have never discovered this kind of layer anywhere in the world before and studying it will help them gain new insights into how islands form.
