Professor Shrinivas Kulkarni, an astronomer of Indian origin, has been honoured with the Royal Astronomical Society’s (RAS) gold medal, recognising his remarkable contributions to time-domain astronomy. The gold medal is the highest honour be stowed by RAS and recognises exceptional work in geophysics and astronomy. Kulkarni has significantly contributed to the study of astronomical phenomena, including gamma-ray bursts, milli-second pulsars and supernovae. Among his most notable achievements was showing that gamma-ray bursts emerge from sources outside the galaxy. Kulkarni is currently engaged in the Ultraviolet Explorer (UVEX) mission of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and is currently associated with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), USA, as a professor.
