Learning Through Experience

388 students from Sri Lanka and India learnt about the engineering involved in developing air purifiers through the efforts of an edtech company called Kruu. With the help of the company, students from classes 6 to 8 used everyday materials to construct their own air purifiers. The project, called ‘Clean Air at Home – Building Your Own Air Purifier’, allowed students to use elements such as high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters and household fans to develop air purifiers. Thomas Talhelm, a professor at the University of Chicago, USA, headed the project, through which students gained practical experience by designing, constructing and even testing their air purifiers. After testing the functioning of their purifiers, they were also encouraged to problem-solve and identify potential improvements. The schools in India that took part in the project included Delhi World Public School in Zirakpur, Anand Vidya Vihar in Vadodara, Sancta Maria International School in Hyderabad and several branches of Sunbeam Schools.
