Following the tragic death of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash, his wife, Sunetra Pawar, has been appointed as the new deputy chief minister of Maharashtra. With this, the 62-year-old has become the first female to serve in this post. Her swearing-in ceremony was held on January 31 and was attended by several political leaders, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Pawar has been allocated the Minority Development and Auqaf, State Excise and Sports and Youth Welfare portfolios. She was also elected as the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). She is a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha and has participated in social work in the past.
