Have you ever kept something because you planned to use it one day, but then never did? Maybe a craft kit you didn’t open, a book you meant to read or sports gear you stopped using. These things are called aspirational clutter.

Have you ever kept something because you planned to use it one day, but then never did? Maybe a craft kit you didn’t open, a book you meant to read or sports gear you stopped using. These things are called aspirational clutter.

Aspirational clutter consists of items we keep because they represent who we aspire to be, rather than who we are at present. It’s not junk. In fact, many of these things are brand new or perfectly useful. But they sit untouched, quietly taking up space.

At first, keeping them feels hopeful. “I’ll start painting soon.” “I’ll practise guitar during the holidays.” But over time, these unused things can make us feel a little un comfortable. Every time we see them, they remind us of plans we didn’t follow through on. That can lead to guilt or pressure—even if we didn’t mean it to.

The important thing to remember is that it’s okay to change your mind. Growing up means discovering what you truly enjoy, and what you don’t. Letting go of some thing doesn’t mean giving up on those dreams; it just means making space for the life you’re living now. You can always go back to things you wanted to do at any point in life, but that doesn’t mean you hold on to the clutter for now.

A good question to recognise aspira tional clutter is to ask yourself, “Does this help me today?”

If the answer is no, it might be time to donate it or pass it on. Storing certain things doesn’t help because in a few years, they will either not work or there might be newer technology.

Remember, your space reflects who you really are. It should make you feel lighter, calmer and more joyful. Clearing spaces helps us breathe better and think better, which makes us happier.
