A team of archaeologists from the Archaeology Council of the National Institute of Anthropology and History have found the remains of an ancient Mayan city at the Balamku ecological reserve in Campeche state in Mexico. The remnants of the city include 50ft-tall pyramid-like buildings, stone columns and other structures. The city has been named Ocomtun, which means ‘stone column’ in the Yucatec Maya language, and archaeologists believe it was an important centre of the Central Lowlands between 250 AD and 1000 AD. The site also contains a ball court and central altars that were used for performing religious practices.
