  • The Raigad Development Authority along with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) discovered an astrolabe possibly used during the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
  • An astrolabe is an ancient portable astronomical instrument.
  • The astrolabe, known as ‘yantraraj’, was discovered at the historically significant Raigad Fort in Maharashtra. The instrument has engravings depicting a snake or a tortoise.
  • Crafted from copper-bronze, the astrolabe also has the words ‘mukh’ and ‘poonchh’ etched onto it. This represents heads and tails. Archaeologists believe this helped people in identifying the north and south directions.
  • The instrument will soon be showcased in a museum in Mumbai.
