Beating Exam Stress

Examinations and tests are a crucial part of education as they help evaluate students’ understanding, knowledge and abilities in different subjects. While exams serve as an important tool to assess students’ academic abilities, they may also be a source of stress and anxiety. Students must learn to cope with exam stress and not allow it to hinder their performance. With exams around the corner, SCARLETT RODRIGUES asked a few RobinAgers how they deal with exam-related anxiety. Here’s what they had to say.

Examinations sometimes cause stress and jitters. As students advance through grades, they start experiencing the gravity of the situation. Everyone around us keeps emphasising that our future is determined by these examinations. To deal with stress, students must get these ideas out of their heads. One should remember that examinations are only a part of life; they are not the only aspect of life. To de-stress, I play football or try to go for a run in the evenings. Getting fresh air helps me clear my head and recharges me mentally. I often engage in reading. Reading even a few pages of a good book takes me to another world for some time. My younger sister and I ask each other riddles and share jokes over dinner. It cheers me up and lightens up my mood.

Examinations cause students to feel pressured because they just worry about the result. This takes away their focus from the preparations. I have a few methods that I use to deal with exam stress. I break the lessons down in a simple way, which helps me understand them better. I do everything I can to stay focused and make sure that I consume healthy meals to maintain my focus. I set small goals and targets, which I accomplish. These micro-wins add to my confidence and make me feel cool and relaxed about the exam. During my examinations, I keep in touch with my friends and family so that I feel comforted. I make sure that I learn from my mistakes as they help me improve and achieve my targets.

I had an overwhelming number of school assignments in December. I had to make sure that all of my stress vanished. Playing basketball helped me to de-stress. I used to give the game my all when I went on the court. All my stress would be left on the court and I would return home feeling happy and relaxed. Thus, I have realised that engaging in a hobby or doing what one loves is a great way to relieve stress. It takes our mind off our worries and helps us regain focus. A refreshed mind helps us think better.

I don’t feel very stressed about examinations as I consider them an evaluation of my concentration and understanding of different subjects throughout the term. But when I get stressed, I calm myself down by practising Prajna yoga or chanting some shlokas. Reading inspirational stories motivates me. I sometimes drink more water than usual. I play cricket for 45 minutes to an hour to feel refreshed.

I usually do not get very stressed before an examination. But if I do, I calm myself down by doing deep breathing exercises. I keep myself prepared for my exams in advance. When studying for an exam, I make sure I keep everything organised so that I do not face any interruption. Decluttering my desk helps me stay focused. I also hug my dog and play with my brother as it comforts me. Sometimes, fidgeting with an object helps me feel better. Playing with slime calms me down and I also take a walk outdoors for fresh air or visit gardens. I mostly enjoy exams because they put pressure on me and help me challenge myself. Talking to myself in a motivational way encourages me to do well.

I love to study so I do not feel very stressed when examinations are around the corner. If I feel stressed or tired, I watch television or listen to music as it soothes my mind. Whenever I have a doubt or need help, I approach my parents. My parents always help me and comfort me. At times, I paint as painting enables me to express my feelings. I sometimes make a study plan, which helps me.
