An Indian mountaineer named Bharath Thammineni successfully scaled Cho Oyu, the westernmost major peak of the Khumbu sub-section of the Mahalangur Himalaya 20kms west of Mount Everest, on October 14. This feat made him the first Indian to successfully climb nine out of the 14 peaks surpassing 8,000mts in height. Cho Oyu is the sixth-tallest mountain globally—it has a height of 8,188mts. The other peaks Thammineni has successfully ascended include Manaslu, Mount Everest and Kangchenjunga. Apart from pursuing mountaineering, he also coaches and guides other mountaineers. Thammineni, who belongs to Andhra Pradesh, has helped mountaineers set records and also supported a blind woman from India to climb Mount Everest.
