The number of Ramsar sites in India has risen to 94 following the inclusion of a wetland in Bihar in the Ramsar site list.
The Ramsar Convention, an international agreement, encourages the sustainable management and preservation of wetlands. Bihar’s Gogabeel Lake, whose preservation is supported by locals, has gained international recognition by earning a spot on the list.
The Gogabeel Lake, situated in Bihar’s Katihar district, is an oxbow lake that is rich in biodiversity. Its inclusion in the list is expected to boost India’s efforts to safeguard the ecosystem.
Bihar follows Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh as the state with the third-highest number of Ramsar sites.
Some of India’s other Ramsar sites include Chilika Lake in Odisha and Loktak Lake in Manipur.
