Deepika Misra created history by becoming the first woman officer in the Indian Air Force (IAF) to receive a gallantry award. Wing Commander Misra, a helicopter pilot and qualified flying instructor, was presented a Vayu Sena Medal for displaying outstanding courage while carrying out a flood relief operation in Madhya Pradesh in 2021. In the rescue effort that lasted for almost a week, she saved the lives of 47 people including women and children by braving harsh weather conditions and strong winds.
