A study conducted by researchers at the University of Arizona, USA, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar has found that the Ganga River experienced acute drying in the past 30 years.
During the period between 1991 and 2020, the river experienced the most intense drying as compared to any other time in 1,300 years. During this period, the drought that occurred from 2004 to 2010 was the most intense.
According to researchers, the overuse of groundwater, decreased monsoon rainfall and pollution have led to this phenomenon.
This will possibly affect both water supply and ecosystems. Experts are calling for responsible water use to protect the Ganga.
