Habitats of India: High Up in the Mountains

Imagine you are trekking up the Himalayas. You will get to see a transition of the vegetation from mixed tropical forests to temperate forests of coniferous trees to, higher still, no trees at all! This region, ‘beyond the tree line’, is the alpine meadows. Here it is extremely cold and windy; hence it cannot support the growth of trees. But even in these harsh conditions, with hardly any soil at all, you will get to see ground-hugging shrubs and herbs, and the most exquisite flowers.
