How I Celebrated Durga Puja

Viraaj Jhunjhunwala, Class 3, St. Xavier’s Collegiate School for Boys, Kolkata

November, 2023

Durga Puja is a holy festival of the Hindus. It falls every year either in the month of September or October. This festival is celebrated as Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura (demon) and thus ending his evil deeds. The festival is celebrated with grandeur, especially in West Bengal. The school declared holidays for 11 days at a stretch and I was delighted. We get to eat dishes like poori, chana, halwa etc. I got ample time to enjoy with my little brother, Vasu. Mom treated us with ice creams and donuts also. I also went to a very big hotel for two days to stay.

In my apartment, three days cultural programme was organized which included dancing, singing, drama, dandia, garba etc. I also got a chance to play my favorite sport, football, with my buddies. During evenings, we went pandal hopping and saw beautiful pandals and idols of Goddess Durga. On the last day of the puja mumma and her friends played with vermillion (sindoor-khela). I am really waiting for the next Durga Puja to come soon.
